Course Description
This five-session course is designed for entry-level job developers, employment specialists, and other frontline staff who work directly with employers to create job opportunities for low-income and hard-to-serve job seekers.
During this hands-on, interactive course, job developers learn practical skills and strategies for reaching out to employers and making effective placements.
This course focuses on how to build and maintain relationships with employers, make matches, and work most effectively as a job developer. This course covers:
- Identifying the value of the service you offer
- Communicating effectively with employers
- Prospecting—including identifying sources of leads, networking, and targeting appropriate industries
- Applying basic sales tenets to the role of job developer
- Maintaining good customer service
- Dealing with the employer when things go wrong
- Engaging employers as long-term advocates for the program
- Making good job matches
- Utilizing resources and effective strategies to help place job-seekers with disabilities, job seekers with criminal records and job seekers with limited English proficiency
- Bringing cultural competency to your relationship with employers and job-seekers
- Maximizing effectiveness and minimizing stress
- Understanding contractual obligations and budgetary pressures
- Working effectively within your organization
- Using technical solutions and Internet tools to enhance your job performance
Course Schedule
Working with Employers includes 30 hours of training conducted over five class sessions. Full course schedule detailed on flyer and application materials.
Course Application
Advance application and payment is required for this course. Applications are reviewed and course seats filled on a rolling basis. Enrollment ends February 26 or once course is full. (Early application is strongly recommended.)
